How to help your child become a safe driver

Teen drivers are statistically more likely to get into accidents than other motorists traveling on Illinois highways. However, there are steps that parents can take to help their children develop into safe drivers. For example, adults are encouraged to model good behavior such as always wearing a safety belt when driving. It’s also a good idea to teach your son or daughter about the dangers of impaired driving.

Don’t engage in distracted driving

If your teen sees you using a cellphone while driving, he or she is likely to do so as well. Therefore, it’s important that you put your phone away whenever your car is in motion. Alternatively, you can have your child answer the phone, send a text or get directions on your behalf.
