Research: Motorists will to trade privacy for safety

Though southern Illinois is not one of the areas in which autonomous vehicles are being tested, we certainly have our share of connected vehicles here. Connected vehicles are newer models with internet access and installed apps or devices that use the internet to connect for traffic or weather data. Of course, some connected vehicles also send data back to manufacturers about performance, accidents, problems, etc.

Safety tips for pedestrians in Chicago

Ask anyone in our region and they will be happy that spring weather has finally arrived. Temperatures in the mid 50’s in the morning and mid 60’s in the evening hours are ideal conditions for taking a walk, whether it is to venture to a favorite café or to catch a baseball game.

Will Ferrell one of many involved in 2-car accident

There are plenty of Illinois and Missouri residents that could quote a seemingly-infinite number of Will Ferrell lines from his movies, TV shows, and other media appearances with ease. Those fans, though, were likely holding their breath earlier today when news reports scorched across social media that Ferrell was involved in a car accident in Los Angeles.

Investigation ongoing into fatal St. Louis crash

A fatal chain reaction crash in St. Louis left one person dead and three injured, as the police try to figure out exactly what happened in the unfortunate incident. The crash occurred last week when a vehicle headed westbound on Reavis Barracks rear-ended a second vehicle. That second vehicle was pushed into oncoming traffic, leading to it getting struck by a third vehicle.

What type of driving weather is most dangerous in Madison County?

As we write this, the weather forecast for Edwardsville is that the temperature will get up to 73 degrees tomorrow, while the high for tomorrow is projected to be a mere 38. As long-time residents understand, it's not unusual for our weather to swing from one extreme to another -- sometimes in the course of a single day.

The distracted driving laws that apply in Illinois

A few weeks ago, we wrote a post about distracted driving. This is a major problem in our society nowadays, as cell phones have completely absorbed our attentions and our mental space. We use them in awkward situations, such as in the middle of intimate conversations. We use them while we walk our dogs and while we perform once uninterrupted activities. And, of course, we use them in far more dangerous situations, such as while we drive or operate heavy machinery.

Why have motor vehicle accident deaths increased recently?

From 1963 to 1991, there were at least 40,000 deaths in motor vehicle accidents every year in the United States. In 1992, we dipped below 40,000 deaths for the first time in decades. It immediately went back above 40,000 in 1993 and never dropped below that number again until 2008.

Beware: Driving distractions can kill

If you like to text, speed and mess with your car's infotainment system when you drive, you are engaging in practices that make you a reckless driver. Keep in mind those are a few of the many types of distractions motorists in Illinois and Missouri use when they operate their vehicles. Distractions are the cause of many car accident fatalities
