Safety tips to help motorcyclists avoid accidents and injuries

Now that the sun is out and shining longer in Illinois, you might find yourself tempted to park the car in the garage and bring out your motorcycle. As appealing and freeing as it may seem to ride out, do not forget that there is a higher risk of danger to motorcyclists on the roads. Motorcycle accidents tend to be more serious than car collisions. Some riders do not sustain injuries that are minor enough for them to live or ride again.

Before you get ready to hit the road, brush up on some motorcycle safety pointers. The more you know and precautions you take to avoid motor vehicle collisions can mean the difference between life and death.

Check out the motorcycle

Defects and malfunctions are not always obvious with a quick visual inspection. Check your motorcycle’s lights, turn signals and mirrors and get a professional inspection to correct any performance issues before you ride. Even minor concerns such as a broken light or cracked mirror can become safety hazards.

Do not take risks

Due to a motorcycle's smaller size and maneuverability, many riders take risks, such as zipping in and out of traffic, speeding up to overtake cars and SUVs, riding in blind spots and making sudden and unpredictable actions that create conditions that increase the likelihood of collision.

Operating any type of motor vehicle is a serious responsibility that involves relying on the alertness and performance of other drivers and other uncontrollable factors. The road is not the place to engage in risky riding behavior. Ride defensively and responsibly every time you are on the road.

Wear helmet and safety gear

Many riders find the use of helmets insulting to their style and riding persona. Though helmets and other safety riding gear may not seem appealing, they do help to lessen the severity of injuries riders sustain when they fall or are thrown from their bikes. Motorcycles alone provide very little protection to shield riders from the road, debris and fallout of collisions. The use of helmets, riding jackets, pants, gloves and other clothing is better than having nothing to shield one’s body from the impact of collision and being dragged along the street, and can often mean the difference between minor injuries and major trauma or death.
