Illinois gets a failing grade for school zone safety

It is critical for drivers to act responsibly in school zones. How drivers behave in such zones can have major implications for student safety. Missteps by drivers could lead to significant and tragic accidents. Unfortunately, a recent study suggests that drivers in Illinois may be falling quite a bit short when it comes to protecting the safety of students.

The study, by ZenDrive, looked at driver conduct around schools across the country. Among the things the study did was give each state a grade for school zone safety.

The study found Illinois to be one of the most dangerous states in the nation when it comes to driver conduct at school zones. The state got an “F” grade for school zone safety.

What are your thoughts on the grade Illinois received in this study? Do you think there are major safety problems in school zones in the state? What do you think it will take to change this?

What kinds of things can drivers do to protect the safety of students in school zones? Here are some important safety tips for drivers to keep in mind when driving near schools:

  • Stay attentive
  • Carefully watch for students
  • Stay off of the cellphone
  • Avoid speeding
  • Obey all traffic signs
  • Watch for and obey school crossing guards
  • Exercise care around school buses and obey bus stop arms.

We hope that, in the upcoming year, all drivers in Illinois will work hard to make the state’s school zones as safe as possible for students.
