3 mistakes people make after getting in a car accident

Getting into a car accident can be devastating. You’re already dealing with potentially serious injuries, property damage and other costs – and you just want to wrap up the process quickly so you can go back to your daily routine.

Far too many drivers act hastily after getting into an accident and make costly mistakes. These are some of the slip-ups we see some of our clients make in the days following their car accident.

1. Not seeking medical treatment

The first thing you want to do following your accident is seek medical treatment for your injuries. Make sure you get the care you need now, and follow through with that care completely. Your health always comes first – and without proper evidence that you received full treatment, you may not be able to be fully reimbursed for the costs of that treatment.

2. Talking to the other driver‘s insurance company

Insurance companies are out to make a profit. Once the other driver’s insurance company gets you on the phone, it is their goal to get you to own up to some of the fault so they can minimize their payout. You don’t want to lie to them either though – just politely decline to speak with them until you receive counsel from your attorney.

3. Accepting the first settlement offer

Again, don’t trust the insurance companies. Far too often, your well-being is not their priority. While the first settlement offer may seem appealing, and you may be tempted to take the money now to cover your future expenses, it could be well below what you need to fully recover.

Making any of these mistakes can be expensive. If you are involved in a car accident, it is always better to be safe than sorry in the days that follow.
